About Me

Hey there!
This is Sanjiban Sengupta! I primarily work in the domains of Machine Learning and Back-end Development. I love to explore emerging technologies, and play with them and being a fan of open-source, I am always looking for new ways to improve my skills by contributing to the community. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from IIIT Bhubaneswar in September 2022, and currently working as a Software Engineer at Voltron Data.

Apart from technology, I love to act, mostly stage and street plays. I have been appearing on stage since 9 years old, and first appeared in a street play in college. I have also co-written and directed as a part of the Direction team and participated in developing satirical videos in YouTube with the Film and Theatre Society of IIIT Bhubaneswar.

Furthermore, I also pursue poetry, and have a particular liking on the Hindi language. I have performed in several open-mic events and have received recognition for my compositions and performances. Before university, I pursued music and fine-art as well, and graduated with Sangeet Bhushan and Chitra Visharad degrees respectively from Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh.

Software Engineer

Voltron Data, USA

  • Working with the Data Engineering team to enhance compute engines, and specifications for relational and data formats.
  • Developing features, tools, and utilities based on Apache Arrow and Substrait for efficient analytic operations on modern hardware.

JUL 2022 - SEP 2022

Summer Student

CERN, Switzerland

  • Worked with the Experimental Physics (Software Development for Experiments) group to enhance TMVA SOFIE, a fast machine learning inference engine in the Root-Project.
  • Designed and implemented the support for the inference of custom operators and Graph Neural Networks, based on Deepmind Graphnets in TMVA SOFIE.
  • I was selected to participate in the Program out of over 2700 applicants globally. It was a comprehensive event organized by CERN for students who have completed at least 3 years of college study. I was among the few selected for the program who worked on an exciting project at CERN and were given the opportunity to visit the CERN experimental sites, participate in lectures by renowned scientists and professors, and workshops on Physics and Technology.

Compute Kernels Engineer Intern

Voltron Data, USA

  • Worked with the Arrow Compute Engine team to develop computation primitives, utilities, and APIs on Apache Arrow and Substrait in C++ and Python.
  • Worked on implementing Computation Schedulers on Apache Arrow for batched execution of operations on huge datasets and was involved in the early development of computation specifications of arithmetic operations and various file format handling in an open-sourced cross-language specifications for data computing project called Substrait.

Machine Learning Engineer Intern (R&D)

Nimblebox.ai, India

  • Worked with the R&D team for the research and implementation of multi-modal deep learning architectures and their use cases to improve the MLOps platform for simplified inference of production-grade models.
  • Was involved in developing use cases for the General Perceivers model for multi-modal usage, and in developing the open-sourced SDK for the deployment of machine learning models.

Software Engineering Intern

  • Worked with the Engineering team on the development of cloud analytics tools that simplify the management and analysis of cloud resources in the Google Cloud Platform.
  • Was involved in the development of a Prediction Engine in Python for anomaly detection and forecasting the costs of cloud usage, in improving the back-end architecture in Golang, and implementing features on the front-end in VueJS.

Machine Learning Intern

  • Worked with the Machine Learning team on implementing and benchmarking NLP systems for developing Software-as-a-Service products focused on sales growth based on the GPT series by OpenAI and EleutherAI
  • Was involved in prompt engineering and implemented text generation and classification features using models of GPT3 by OpenAI.

JUN 2021 - AUG 2021

Google Summer of Code Student Developer

CERN, Switzerland

  • Worked with the TMVA Team of ROOT under CERN-HSF to implement functionalities to facilitate the storage, usage, and exchange of deep learning models in ROOT format.
  • Built custom streamers for serialization of trained deep learning models in ROOT following ONNX standards and converters using C-Python API for translating models from external frameworks.
  • My proposal for the program was selected out of 6,991 applications. Google Summer of Code is an international program sponsored and organized by Google for students to participate and work on an open-source coding project from a renowned organization.

  • Worked with the Machine Learning team to develop models for image processing, feature extraction, object classification, and text detection which led to better ranking of images in a social media platform.
  • Implemented models based on ResNet50 for object classification and EAST Text Detector for text identification in images.

I lead a team and we participated in a National-level hackathon for developing solutions to simplify the education process during the time of the pandemic. We developed a mobile application called Fedole with features for easy-to-use content creation for lectures, facilities for doubt clearance, finding the best route for travel around the university by avoiding crowded places, and tracking covid spread on a university campus.

A team I led participated and was ranked among the top winning teams in a National-level hackathon for developing solutions for various COVID issues. We developed a tool called Viraak, a platform for connecting volunteers to crowd-source the delivery process of essential commodities and medicines.

I lead a team and we participated in a National-level hackathon for developing solutions on varied domains. We developed Sanshrey, a mobile application for providing simplified and localized information and utilities catering to the needs of people during the pandemic. We modeled basic features that would be necessary during the pandemic, like a COVID dashboard providing detailed and localized information, a crowd-sourcing tool for aggregating funds and help, a travel helper providing information about local traveling restrictions and precautions, and a medical facilitator for acquiring medical information and providing them to the needy.

For the best participation from a college by several teams, we were awarded the Best College Award in the Mock Pitching event. My team presented our idea and implementation of a company profiling platform that helps to bridge employers and employees using machine learning techniques by understanding and correlating professional and behavioral traits of job seekers and people already employed by a certain organization.

Innerve, the annual technical fest of Indira Gandhi Technological University for Women, New Delhi
I lead a team and we participated in the National-level hackathon for developing solutions involving data science and analytics techniques. My team developed a real-estate data analysis and prediction system called Realate. Essentially a web application, having features like predicting the optimal land cover and usage from an aerial image, the best route for travel, etc.

Young Leaders for Active Citizenship, in collaboration with WRI India Ross Center, Let me breathe, and the Directorate of Urban Land Transport, and Govt. of Karnataka.
I lead a team and we participated in a National-level hackathon for developing solutions for addressing the traffic and mobility challenges of the city. My team worked on prototyping a platform for congestion control, traffic scheduling, and last-minute connectivity services.

I lead a team and we participated in a national-level hackathon for developing solutions for a variety of problem statements. We developed a company profiling platform called Jobin that helps to connect employers and job seekers using machine learning techniques by understanding and correlating professional and behavioral traits of job seekers and people already employed by a certain organization. It understands a job seeker’s skillsets and work preferences from numerous factors and tries to match them with the employees of a company and predicts a suitability index thus helping them toward job applications.

Attended a training program organized by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, Govt. of India, on image forensics, cryptography, and cyber security.

Algorithms on Big Data and Machine Learning, 2020

  • I was selected to participate in the ACM India Winter School 2020 on Algorithms for Big Data and Machine Learning, organized by the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, and sponsored by Microsoft Research, India.
  • The training comprised two weeks of lectures, tutorials, and discussions on topics like Streaming Algorithms, Communication Complexity, Approximation, Randomization, etc. by researchers from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences Chennai, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata, and Microsoft Research India, with the primary focus on the theoretical aspects of Big Data & Machine Learning.
